Wireless charging: what is it and where is it used?

Menu

Electronic chargers are designed to power the batteries of various gadgets. Charging is done using the energy of an external source (most often from an alternating current type). Without such a device, it will not be possible to charge the smartphone for full operation.

To increase the level of convenience, engineers and developers were able to come up with wireless charging for mobile devices, which implies the complete absence of unnecessary wires. This method of charging can be called "commercial".

Wireless charging is a technology developed by a US company, the Wireless Power Consortium, about 8 years ago. In a short period of time, the benefits of this technology have been appreciated by millions of users around the world. Wireless charging is a method of electromagnetic induction, in theory.

How does wireless charging work?

Wireless charger works thanks to a special technology that many modern smartphones support. This technology provides for the presence of a special induction coil in the charging gadget and in the mobile phone itself, headphones, tablet or smart watch.

Charging the device via Qi wireless technology occurs in stages:

  • The output voltage is converted into alternating current with high frequencies.
  • An alternating current is sent to the coil of the transmitter device through the circuit of the same transmitter. After that, the alternating current induces a magnetic field of the coil, which changes with time.
  • The same alternating current flows in the coil of the transmitter itself, inducing a magnetic field flux that distributes energy to the coils of the receiver device (if the correct distance between devices is maintained).
  • Next, a current is generated in the receiver coil by a magnetic field. The process of transferring this energy between the receiver and the transmitter is called resonant coupling.
  • Then the current entering the receiver coil is converted into a stable one, thanks to the circuit of this receiver. And after this cycle, the current allows the use of charging the battery of the device.

Therefore, when choosing wireless charging, you should make sure that the standard for such a transfer is supported by a smartphone or other device. It is this criterion that is the basis of compatibility, and not the device model or brand.

Today, wireless charging is used for small gadgets:

Such a narrow list of devices is still associated with power limitations.

Wireless accessories can be built into various useful smart appliances, having the following form factors:

  • Automotive (wireless phone holders, adapters, brackets).
  • Platforms, panels and stands (docking station).
  • Desktop (desk clock with wireless charging, lamps, various smart accessories).
  • Built into furniture.
  • Power Bank with Qi.

What gadgets use wireless charging?

Considering that modern technologies do not linger in place, every year we can observe the emergence of interesting and useful gadgets that deserve the attention of users. Wireless charging, in this case, is also no exception, having a wide demand in the smart device market.

Below is a list of gadgets that may have wireless charging technology.

Smartphones

How to find out if there is wireless charging on the phone?

As mentioned above, before buying devices with wireless charging, it is important to check if the smartphone supports this technology. Wireless chargers for smartphones are available all over the world in a wide range and at different prices - from affordable to very expensive. The wireless charging type included in the devices is compatible with many mobile phones and tablets, but not all models.

This information can be clarified with the seller before buying a smartphone, and it can also be indicated on the box of the device or in the instruction manual. In addition, you can find information about this function in the product specifications on the website of the manufacturer / official representative in the desired country. Most models of modern smartphones of well-known brands such as iPhone, Xiomi, Samsung and others support the wireless charging function.

Smart watch

Most modern wrist accessories also support fast charging technology. For them, you can purchase individual wireless chargers or a docking station that will allow you to charge several gadgets at the same time (smartphone, headphones and smart watch).

Wireless TWS headphones

They are one of the irreplaceable devices and can be discharged at the wrong time. Some models are designed to support wireless charging case-case.

Is Qi dangerous to health?

Given the fact that wireless charging technology is only gaining popularity, many are worried about the possible harm from the radiation of such devices, which immediately resembles the myth about the danger of mobile phones that allegedly cause diseases. The World Health Organization has confirmed that smartphones are not dangerous to human health. And wireless charging, in turn, is much simpler.

The same applies to the question of the dangers of wireless charging for the phone's battery. Developers and engineers conducted a series of experiments and tests that made it clear that wireless charging does not harm smartphone batteries, only if it is purchased from an official seller with a product license and has a quality guarantee.

Advantages and disadvantages of wireless phone chargers

Like other household devices or electronics, wireless chargers have their pros and cons.

The advantages of such devices include the following:

Ability to charge multiple devices at once

Compared to standard chargers from the network, it immediately becomes clear that the convenience of wireless charging lies in the absence of extra wires, attachment to a power outlet, and so on. Moreover, various docking stations are able to provide power for several devices at the same time.

Ease of use charging

To charge a smartphone, it is enough to place it on a special platform or surface, after which the smartphone starts charging immediately.

Operational safety

As you know, USB cables and various adapters are not immune from power surges, which can harm the equipment being charged. If this network problem is a frequent occurrence, then wireless charging is a great alternative.

Durable work

For standard recharging from a socket and cords, you need to connect the phone again every time, insert the power supply into a socket or a cable into a laptop. These movements, one way or another, lead to gradual wear of the port for the phone connector. Wireless charging in this case allows you to keep your smartphone in good condition. Qi is also more durable than cables and power supplies.

Minimize overheating and battery damage

Most modern wireless chargers are smart. They can detect the full battery level and automatically stop charging them. This in turn also saves energy.

The disadvantages of Qi include:

  • Wireless charging is a larger device, in contrast to the cord and block. Therefore, it is ideal for use in the office or at home. Although today you can find a power bank with such technology.
  • One of the minor disadvantages is the placement of the smartphone on wireless charging. Only if you correctly and evenly place the phone on the device, the charge will flow. Random movements away from the required charge point can disconnect the mobile phone.
  • Using a smartphone during wireless charging is not as convenient as it might seem at first glance. Moreover, most wireless chargers stop charging the device as soon as the user tries to use it.
  • Wireless charging takes longer than wired power. It is not yet so practical to use such a device on the road and travel.

How to enable and use wireless charging correctly?

Before you start using wireless charging, it is recommended to study the instructions that come with the device. We have compiled the basic steps for the correct inclusion and further operation of Qi:

  1. The first thing to do is to connect the wireless charger to the network (to a power outlet or computer via a USB cable). After this action, the device will turn on and the indicator light will light up.
  2. Next, you need to place the smartphone on the Qi panel. If the phone does not start charging, it is enough to activate this function in the smartphone settings menu.
